Dow plunges more than 200 after dismal jobs report

Stocks fell sharply Friday after the release of a dismal report on hiring and employment in the United States. The Dow Jones industrial average dropped more than 200 points, erasing what was left of its gain for the year.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index and Nasdaq composite index both fell more than 2 percent in the first 90 minutes of trading. The Dow was on track for its steepest one-day drop since November.

American employers added just 69,000 jobs in May, the fewest in a year, and the unemployment rate ticked up to 8.2 percent from 8.1 percent. Economists had forecast a gain of 158,000 jobs.

The report, considered the most important economic indicator each month, also said that hiring in March and April was considerably weaker than originally thought.

"The big worry now is that this economic slowdown is widening and accelerating," said Sam Stovall, chief equity strategist at S&P Capital IQ, a market research firm.

About two hours into trading, the Dow was down 218 points at 12,175, leaving it with a loss of 0.3 percent for the year. Earlier this year, the Dow was up more than 8 percent.

Economic data from Europe and Asia also came in weak. Traders sold all types of risky investments and stampeded toward the safety of U.S. government bonds. Bond prices rose sharply, and the yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note touched 1.44 percent, the lowest on record.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index was down 25 points at 1,284. The Nasdaq was off 60 at 2,767. Both indexes were still up for the year ? about 2 percent for the S&P and 6 percent for the Nasdaq.

May was by some measures the worst month for the stock market in two years. Investors' worries about Europe's debt crisis intensified as the month wore on.

The jobs report drew traders' attention back to the weakening U.S. economy, said Todd Salamone, director of research for Schaeffer's Investment Research in Cincinnati.

"The weaker jobs report translates into anticipation of slower growth ahead and weaker corporate earnings, and that ratchets stock prices lower," Salamone said.

Stovall said that traders are waiting to see what governments and central banks might do to juice global economic activity. Otherwise, the losses would be even deeper, he said.

The Fed launched bond-buying programs in 2009 and 2010 to lower interest rates and help stock prices, but it has resisted a third round of that approach, known as quantitative easing.

Anticipation of bond-buying by the Fed "might put in a little bit of a floor to the market, but the overall economic picture is still bad," said Bob Gelfond, CEO of MQS Asset Management, a New York hedge fund.

The price of gold shot higher. It rose $49 an ounce to $1,613. For much of the past three years, investors have bought gold for safety during a turbulent time for the world economy.

The dollar weakened. The euro rose half a penny against the dollar to $1.24. The price of a barrel of oil fell more than $3 to $83.05, extending a monthlong slide.

Gold spiked and the dollar fell partly because traders expect more intervention by the Federal Reserve, Gelfond said.

Bond-buying adds to the supply of money coursing through the economy and leads some investors to worry about future inflation, which would make the dollar less valuable. Traders buy gold as a hedge against inflation.

Stocks fell broadly. Only 20 companies in the S&P were higher for the day.

Homebuilders led the market lower, despite a report that construction spending rose for a second month in April. PulteGroup fell 10 percent, D.R. Horton 9 percent and Lennar 8 percent. The three had the biggest declines of companies in the S&P 500.

Boeing, the biggest U.S. exporter, fell 2.5 percent, one of the biggest declines among the 30 companies that make up the Dow. Traders fear that the economic slowdown will hurt global demand for its airplanes and defense technologies.

The job picture remained dark elsewhere in the world. Unemployment in the 17 countries that use the euro currency stayed at a record-high 11 percent in April, and unemployment rose spiked to almost 25 percent in Spain.

There were also signs that growth in China, which was a bulwark during the global recession, is slowing significantly. China's manufacturing weakened in May, according to surveys released Friday.

Stocks were down considerably in Europe. Benchmark stock indexes fell about 4 percent in Germany and Greece, and nearly 3 percent in France. British stocks were down but fared slightly better.

Key gene found responsible for chronic inflammation, accelerated aging and cancer

NEW YORK, May 24, 2012 Researchers at NYU School of Medicine have, for the first time, identified a single gene that simultaneously controls inflammation, accelerated aging and cancer.

"This was certainly an unexpected finding," said principal investigator Robert J. Schneider, PhD, the Albert Sabin Professor of Molecular Pathogenesis, associate director for translational research and co-director of the Breast Cancer Program at NYU Langone Medical Center. "It is rather uncommon for one gene to have two very different and very significant functions that tie together control of aging and inflammation. The two, if not regulated properly, can eventually lead to cancer development. It's an exciting scientific find."

The study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, appears online ahead of print today in Molecular Cell and is scheduled for the July 13 print issue.

For decades, the scientific community has known that inflammation, accelerated aging and cancer are somehow intertwined, but the connection between them has remained largely a mystery, Dr. Schneider said. What was known, due in part to past studies by Schneider and his team, was that a gene called AUF1 controls inflammation by turning off the inflammatory response to stop the onset of septic shock. But this finding, while significant, did not explain a connection to accelerated aging and cancer.

When the researchers deleted the AUF1 gene, accelerated aging occurred, so they continued to focus their research efforts on the gene. Now, more than a decade in the making, the mystery surrounding the connection between inflammation, advanced aging and cancer is finally being unraveled.

The current study reveals that AUF1, a family of four related genes, not only controls the inflammatory response, but also maintains the integrity of chromosomes by activating the enzyme telomerase to repair the ends of chromosomes, thereby simultaneously reducing inflammation, preventing rapid aging and the development of cancer, Dr. Schneider explained.

"AUF1 is a medical and scientific trinity," Dr. Schneider said. "Nature has designed a way to simultaneously turn off harmful inflammation and repair our chromosomes, thereby suppressing aging at the cellular level and in the whole animal."

With this new information, Dr. Schneider and colleagues are examining human populations for specific types of genetic alterations in the AUF1 gene that are associated with the co-development of certain immune diseases, increased rates of aging and higher cancer incidence in individuals to determine exactly how the alterations manifest and present themselves clinically.

Pirates blank Cubs for 10th straight loss

By WILL GRAVES

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:10 p.m. ET May 25, 2012

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pedro Alvarez is in the Pittsburgh Pirates lineup every day because of his bat.

Turns out, the third baseman's feet - not to mention his glove - work too.

Alvarez scored on an unconventional slide in the second inning for the game's only run and turned in a couple of defensive gems to help the Pirates to a 1-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Friday night.

"I try to be ready every time on defense and anticipate the ball being hit to me," Alvarez said. "Like I've said before, I take a lot of pride in my defense."

A.J. Burnett and four relievers sent the listless Cubs to their 10th straight loss by surviving on a night the Pirates allowed 10 hits and ran into trouble in just about every inning.

Burnett (3-2) gave up six hits, struck out six and walked two over 5 1-3 innings and the National League's best bullpen made it stand up as Pittsburgh extended Chicago starter Ryan Dempster's misery. Joel Hanrahan worked out of a two-on, one out jam in the ninth for his 11th save.

Dempster (0-3) remains winless since last August, surrendering one run and seven hits in 7 1-3 innings, striking out six and walking one while dropping his ERA to 2.14.

Still, it wasn't enough to keep the Cubs from posting their first 10-game losing streak since dropping the first 14 games of the 1997 season.

Chicago left 11 runners on base and went 0 for 12 with runners in scoring position. Pittsburgh wasn't much better but only needed Rod Barajas' RBI-single that scored Alvarez to beat the floundering Cubs.

"It's unbelievable," Chicago manager Dale Sveum said. "We out-hit the opponent every night and can't score. We can't seem to get that hit with men in scoring position."

The Cubs started the season 13-11 but have sunk to the bottom of the NL Central thanks to an offense that has stopped producing. They have scored just four runs in their last 56 innings.

"I'm a little lost for words now," Sveum said. "It's kind of the same thing. But guys are battling, having decent, good at-bats - just not finalizing it, really. A lot of good at-bats, just not getting it done."

Chicago had plenty of chances, putting at least one runner in scoring position in all but two innings, but Burnett relied on his slider and his defense to wiggle free on a night where he labored to get through Chicago's struggling lineup.

Burnett needed 105 pitches to get 16 outs and took advantage of some nifty glovework by Alvarez, who saved at least one run in the fifth by making a diving stab of a sharp grounder by Joe Mather then firing to first to end the inning as the Cubs came up empty with runners on second and third.

"The defense was big," Burnett said. "They saved a couple of them and I was able to find my hook for a batter or two."

Chicago threatened again an inning later only to run itself out of a two-on, one-out situation when Alfonso Soriano crashed into Alvarez trying to move from second to third on a groundball by Darwin Barney. Soriano was called out due to runners' interference and reliever Jared Hughes got Koyle Hill to ground meekly to second to end the threat.

The Cubs ran out of chances once the Pirates got to their bullpen, which leads the National League in ERA. Jason Grilli struck out the side in the seventh, Juan Cruz picked off Chicago's Tony Campana at second base to cut short a rally in the eighth before Hanrahan took over in the ninth.

Chicago put runners on the corners with one out on singles by Barney and pinch-hitter Reed Johnson but Hanrahan struck out David DeJesus and Starlin Castro to end it.

"Runners on the corners, you're thinking `How you going to get out of it?"' Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. "(Hanrahan) showed you how to get out, you get ahead and throw strikes."

The loss was more of the same for Dempster, who hasn't won in a stretch of 17 starts. He's been among the best pitchers in the NL this season, but has been undone by a lack of run support.

The Cubs have scored just 16 runs in Dempster's eight starts this season.

"It's hard for us - 10 games in a row is not a lot of fun," Dempster said. "It doesn't make coming to the ballpark fun, it doesn't make going out there and playing fun. We've just got to fight through it."

NOTES: Pittsburgh RF Josh Harrison went 1 for 4 to extend his hitting streak to 10 games ... Chicago reliever Carlos Marmol could be activated off the DL on Monday. Marmol hasn't pitched since May 11 due to a strained right hamstring ... Pittsburgh starter Jeff Karstens will start for Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday as he continues to rehab from a right shoulder inflammation ... The series continues Saturday, with Chicago's Paul Maholm (4-3, 4.73 ERA) facing Pittsburgh's Kevin Correia (1-5, 4.50). Maholm spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Pirates before signing with the Cubs during the offseason.

Posture back support can help you in easing off excess pressure and strain from your back.

Due to the kind of lifestyle that we lead these days our body and mind is under constant strain and the one portion of our body that bears most of the brunt of this strain is our back. Whether you are standing, sitting or doing any other work the strain falls on the back portion. Hence it is very important for us to have the proper posture so that we can avoid putting strain on our back. Posture back support is something that you can use in your chair at the office or at home or in your car seat to give your back the support it needs so that you do not suffer from any kind of pain or stress. Either you can use back support chairs or back support belt to ensure that you have proper posture back support. Make sure that you do this promptly if you want to get rid of those pains without any further delay.

If you are not very sure what you should be using for your chronic back support you can consult a professional medical practitioner and ask him what you should be using for this. Most of the cars do not come with adequate posture back support, so what you must do is make sure that you have proper back support in place for your car seat. This is all the more important when you go for a long drive as you will be driving for a long time and if you do not have proper back support you will end up having back pain and probably a stiff back. The lumbar posture back support that is installed in some cars is adjustable so that you can place it in a position as per your convenience. Also there are products available in the market that you can use for getting proper posture support in your car seat.

It has been seen that a simple back support can work wonders for you. If you are not very sure about the size of the back support you must be using, you can start with a small one and then gradually proceed to a bigger one if you find that the small one is not adequate for you. Sometimes it may happen that you need to put a posture back support in your car immediately, so for this you can use a small towel, roll it up and tie both the ends with a rubber band. You can than place this cushioned support between your back and the car seat or the chair where you are sitting so that you feel comfortable and continue doing your work without any hindrance.

It is not that you need to have proper back support only while you are working, you must take adequate care of your back even while you are sleeping. If you place a pillow under your knee, while sleeping this can help in reducing a big amount of pressure from your back. You do not need to take too much of a pain or an effort to have the proper posture back support, you just need to make a little effort towards this.

IBM Bans Siri in Workplace

IBM has reportedly banned the use of the iPhone 4S voice recognition service Siri, but not because it's annoying or pointless. It's a security risk.

Possibly, anyway.

IBM Chief Information Officer Jeanette Horan said earlier this week that destination for outgoing search inquiries made using Siri could be a concern.

SIRI

When people ask Siri a question the data is sent to Apple's facility in Maiden, N.C. After that, no one knows what the company does with the date.

This alarms IBM, as Apple could be storing their information on their servers.

Apple doesn't sayow long data is stored or who can access it, but Horan has made it pretty clear that the company is "extraordinarily conservative."

Edward Wrenbeck, Apple's Siri developer, downplayed concerns, saying "People already do these things on mobile devices. Maybe Siri makes their lives easier, but it's not exactly opening up a new avenue that wasn't there before."

Well, except for cellphones getting racist or telling off Zooey Deschanel.
